All About Food

Starbucks, Part 2:
Caramel Macchiato (which I can't pronounce correctly) is right out. Peppermint Mocha with soy milk and no whipped cream is the new flavor of the month (literally and figuratively). It is utterly fantastic and pronounceable. The sad part is that I want one every day, but must settle for brewing my own coffee and using Coffemate Peppermint Mocha creamer instead (it isn't even close though).

Tales of Turkey Day:
Henceforth to be known as Stuffing Day featuring Wine, Dessert, and Some Turkey. More planning, shopping, chopping, mixing, baking, roasting, sauteing, and basting went into this meal than I have ever witnessed. I will simply provide a menu as a recap on our day of glorious gluttony and Americanism. Not a single dish was store-bought and nearly every dish featured vegetables, fruit, and/or herbs grown in my uncle's organic garden.

Stuffing Day, 2006:
  • Carrot Soup with optional pistachio garnish
  • Garden salad with three types of lettuce, bell peppers, cranberries, etc. (served with an optional homemade vinaigrette)
  • Lumpy parmesan-garlic mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy
  • Acorn squash dish
  • Cous cous with roasted corn
  • Chestnut and currant mushroom stuffing
  • Leek and wild mushroom stuffing with a Chalah loaf mixed in
  • Quinoa-raisin stuffing
  • Fresh cranberry sauce
  • Sourdough bread loaf
  • Sauteed Green Beans with roasted tomatoes
  • Fresh fruit salad
  • Steamed and Baked Carrot and Brussel Sprouts Dish
  • Baked Turkey basted with a cognac glaze
  • Wild Huckleberry pie with dark chocolate chips
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Professionally made chocolate celebration cake (with very fancy frosting and decorations)
  • Pecan Pie
  • Homemade whipped cream
  • Four bottles of wine, including an excellent Bethel Heights Pinot Noir and an outstanding Studert Prum Reisling Kabinett 2005
Vino:
On Friday and Saturday we visited two wineries for Pinot Noir tastings (Oregon is known internationally for its Pinot). I am not a big fan of it, though, as I lack the sophisticated palate to appreciate the flavors. The only wines I like are some of the whites, like a smooth German riesling. People at wine tastings ignore the typical rules of social interaction. Personal space is violated, very public and prolonged displays of affection occur, people cut in line and ignore one's presence there, etc. There are hundreds of wineries in Oregon and dozens within thirty miles of my town, some affording breath-taking views of the countryside and mountain ranges.

Movies:
Thumbs Up to Stranger Than Fiction and Flags of Our Fathers
Thumbs Down to For Your Consideration (about five laughs in the whole movie, a low for C. Guest)

macchiato is italian for dirty, but it also means with a little milk added when speaking of coffee.
